Religious Liberty and Artistic Integrity on One Life to Live is Punished Over Gay Storyline

Patricia Mauceri

Patricia Mauceri

This is kind of amazing.  From Fox News:

Mauceri played the recurring role of Carlotta Vega on “OLTL” for the last 14 years. But when she objected to how the writers wanted her deeply religious character, a Latina mother, to handle a storyline involving homosexuality, she objected. And for that she claims she was fired.

Mauceri, 59, a devout Christian, told FOX News that character Vega’s gay-friendly dialogue was not in line with the character she helped create by drawing on her own faith.

“I did not object to being in a gay storyline. I objected to speaking the truth of what that person, how that person would live and breathe and act in that storyline,” she said. “And this goes against everything I am, my belief system, and what I know the character’s belief system is aligned to.”

Mauceri said she was replaced despite offering changes to the script and hoping for a compromise.

An ABC spokesperson said they were not aware of any such claims by Mauceri, adding such claims “would be frivolous.”

Firing an actress you liked enough to keep her in the character for fourteen years over one of the myriad story lines penned for One Life To Live … is “frivolous?”

This is a show that can:

  • Have Viki Buchanan (now Victoria Lord Banks after six or so marriages) has two  personalities and her promiscuous one (Niki … I know … so very original) kidnapped the evil vixen Dorian Lord (who also happens to be Viki’s ex-stepmother) and hide her in a basement for at least 10 episodes.
  • How many times was Asa Buchanan married? 40? … 50?
  • They also had Tina Lord making out with David Vickers when she thought he was her brother!  He was lying to try and get some of the family money … but hello, she thought he was her brother and still made out with him! Now….that’s some kind of … something right there.
  • And let’s not forget the Darlene “Luna” Moody who literally fell from the heavens into Llanview society in 1992. She was skydiving, and her parachute was blown off-course so that she landed on the yard of the Llanview country club during a gala event. Luna was a devoted Wiccan who believed in reincarnation and the spirit world. She hosted a radio talk show and ran the Serenity Springs health spa. The spa was situated on land owned by Max Holden, whom Luna immediately fell for. Max was infatuated with Blair Daimler (who was married to his arch-enemy Asa Buchanan)
  • That Asa was such a playa’.

So, with all of that and plllllenty more … One Life to Live can imagine and create all of that craziness … but they can’t handle a socially conservative Christian character remaining a socially conservative Christian character?

going on the point I made at the LINC conference (European type of Exodus conference, just not as flash cos we've got no cash!), cool, this lady stood up for her faith as a Christian and wanted her Christian character to speak the Truth. Cool, I don't object to that. Until speaking the Truth only applies to same-sex relationships etc. If Mauceri really is standing up for her faith, why wasn't she fired from the show years ago, standing up against implied incest, divorce, Wicca etc? Why did she decide homosexuality was when she was going to open her mouth and stand as a Christian speaking Truth?
Or maybe she was just fired, for whatever other reason, and is crying religious discrimination?
When Christians cry religious discrimination when it's homosexuality that is the one issue they have decided to take a stand on in the workplace, I become very suspicious of homophobia. Cos if people really are standing as Christians in the workplace, why don't they take a stand on gossip etc? And note, it's always heterosexual Christians who take this stand and face this terrible religious discrimination. Always heterosexual. I wonder why that is…?

You don't know that she didn't. Her character, a minor one, may not have had any interactions with all the other stuff so you wouldn't see it on screen. I think you have unfairly judged her by the assumed cynical "what if's" that are normally judgments cast against Christians by gay activists.

I knew hoity toity Christians who did hold to moral standards all throughout my secular career. They didn't get fired. They didn't get invited to the parties either :) .

Plus, when I was in England, you said you were persecuted for your beliefs on the job … right? I certainly heard more than several who claimed such. It isn't just the heterosexually inclined that get persecuted.
