Yesterday I had the opportunity to speak with Andrew Harmon, Sr. Editor of The Advocate about the upcoming Day of Truth scheduled for April 15. I have to say that Mr. Harmon was the most respectful and pleasant interview I have had with a pro-gay journalist and I truly enjoyed my conversation with him. While we definitely disagree on many levels, it was a great example of two people having an honest conversation, while showing mutual respect and tolerance.
There is one point that I feel needs to be clarified. I’m sure this is not due to any intentional misleading on behalf of Mr. Harmon’s part, but perhaps a lack of clarity on mine. In the article, I was quoted:
“Reparative therapy is one of many therapeutic approaches, and we feel that there is value in it. But we’re not publicly endorsing it.”
I did find it interesting how this subject was oddly inserted into an interview about Day of Truth. Especially considering that the vision for Day of Truth is students having an honest conversation about relationships, sexuality, and faith. In context of the conversation with Mr. Harmon, this statement was meant to express that the Day of Truth is not endorsing any particular therapeutic approach. That is simply not the mission of this event.
Exodus does support many different approaches that help individuals to live their lives in congruence with their faith. Reparative therapy is one of those approaches. Our position on Reparative Therapy is as follows:
“Exodus International believes that reparative therapy – a holistic, counseling approach to addressing unwanted same-sex attraction – can be a beneficial tool. Exodus International is not a clinical facility and does not conduct clinical treatment of any kind. Our goal is to provide resources, spiritual mentorship and support to those wanting to reconcile their faith-based beliefs with their sexual behavior. Reparative therapy has been beneficial to many within our network. Exodus provides referrals to independent professionals who provide this resource.”
Despite any misunderstandings, I hope that this interview and resulting article will serve as an example of how people can disagree on sensitive subject matters, yet still show respect and tolerance for each other. My hope is that this will be an example of what Day of Truth is all about.
