When To Confront Someone’s Sin? – John Piper (Video)

I am currently writing for a different project the topic of salvation and how some emphasize sin and hell to an inordinate degree.  It’s a tough one to write.  I found this video late last night.

I think it is important to note that Piper says that the importance of “confronting” sin in another increases among Christians to other Christians. That is what I understand from the scriptures as well. However, he also emphasizes that we have to be aware of our own spiritual walk with humility and meekness before talking with someone else about what he terms “destructive” behavior.

Now, he is talking about sin in general … not just sexual sin. Because sexuality is so very intimate and wrapped into our own sense of self, even extra care is needed to follow humility, meekness and the right time to do so.

Because this other post I am working on is difficult (concerning salvation, sin) I would love your feedback on the points Piper addresses in his video. You can also find a transcript of the video here.

Thanks!

  1. I think he’s pretty on target. I also think it’s helpful to consider if the sin/struggle you see is part of a bigger issue. Is there a deeper heart issue going on? Is the sin/struggle you see an outward manifestation on an inward condition? Well, almost always yes. So how do I minister to this person in a way that addresses the deeper issues? We can stop the surface behaviors (as the Pharisees did) without ever allowing God to change and deal with our hearts, and ultimately, He wants our hearts.
