From The Guardian: Nearly three-quarters of a million adults in Britain say they are gay or bisexual, according to figures published for the first time today by the Office of National Statistics. The findings, based on interviews with more than 450,000 people – the biggest pool of social data after the census – show that an estimated 481,000 people regard themselves as gay and a further 245,000 – mainly women – say they are bisexual. The estimate puts Britain's gay community at 1.5% of the total population – much lower than the most commonly used estimate of 5% to 7%, which … [Read more...]

British Comedienne, and Former Lesbian, Becomes Happily Married Mother of Four

Jackie Clune

From How I Went from Committed Lesbian to a Happily Married Mother of Four: Looking at my four children racing around the garden with their father, it seems almost impossible to believe that only a few years ago I never imagined having a family. Or rather, when I did stop to think of myself as becoming a mother, I imagined the only way I'd do so would be through an anonymous sperm donor. Today, with five-year-old triplets, Thady, Frank and Orla, and a seven-year-old daughter, Saoirse, a husband and a home in a leafy London suburb, I could be viewed as the archehtypal wife and mother, … [Read more...]

Eve Tushnet, “Gay and Celibate,” Featured in the New York Times

Photo Credit: Luke Sharrett/The New York Times

I still hold the perspective that we are headed, increasingly, into a post-gay reality.  A reality where gay vs. straight forced into the glbtqi? soup of labels fails to suffice as our (those who have or had same sex attractions) only context for a relational paradigm. Is Eve an example of that post-gay reality coming into being?  I don't believe I have ever met her and not sure she would agree with me since she does embrace a gay identity ... but her life doesn't really fit any of the conventional culture war stereotypes.  I find that intriguing. From the New York Times: WASHINGTON … [Read more...]

Cardinal Barragan’s Remarks about Transsexuals, Homosexuals and Heaven is Not The Whole Story

vatican framed

The religious discussion over homosexuality needs to be clear and balanced with the whole of scripture.  Soundbites do not do the topic justice.  Here is an example. Cardinal Javier Lozano Barragan said that while the Church regarded homosexuality as an "insult to God", this did not justify discrimination against gay and transsexual people. "Transsexuals and homosexuals will never enter the kingdom of heaven and it is not me who says this, but Saint Paul," the cardinal said, in comments reported by the Ansa news agency. "People are not born homosexual, they become homosexual, for … [Read more...]

Catholic Sex Abuse Scandal Lives On to Create More Defensive Accusations

The Pope

I found out about this article from a blog called Queerty.  I am not linking to the blog because while it usually has relevant news posts worth monitoring... it likes its soft porn and we don't link to blogs that promote soft porn.  But, to the point, the Vatican issues a strongly worded statement parsed out for consumption in this article.  Here is a quote to focus on here: ... The statement said that rather than paedophilia, it would "be more correct" to speak of ephebophilia, a homosexual attraction to adolescent males. "Of all priests involved in the abuses, 80 to 90% belong to this … [Read more...]
