Follow Up Reactions To Tyler Clementi and the “September Suicides”

Warren Throckmorton writes on the CNN Belief Blog: As a traditional evangelical, I may have some differences of opinion with my gay friends. However, such ideological differences don’t matter to a middle school child who is afraid to go to school. Agreed. Family Research Council links to my post on Tyler Clementi: Bullying Is Hate; Truth Is Love In recent weeks there have been several suicides of teenagers who either said they were, or were believed to be, homosexuals. The intense media coverage of these events has led some people to lay the blame for these tragedies not on the … [Read more...]

Why Does The Gay Community Refuse to Acknowledge Our Testimony?

Q&A

This question was left on my formspring service after I wrote this post on my personal blog.  I will answer it by parsing out the different points.  First ... How can people in the gay community make that claim dismissing a person once being gay? I think some (not all) make that claim just like Conservatives and/or Christians who used to claim (some still do) that there are no truly gay people.  What I have discovered is that people on both sides, actually people in general, are not usually happy with others whose identity and/or moral systems are based in direct opposite views to their … [Read more...]

Prop 8 Decision Imminent – Life Goes On Regardless of “Winner”

prop 8

UPDATE 4:49 PM EDT: Judge rules Prop 8 unconstitutional. When Alan decided a couple of years ago to pull Exodus out of public policy I was in total agreement.  That whole realm fascinates me and has since I was in High School (Youth in Government Club.)  We, Alan and I, gave it our best effort for about 4 years and learned plenty of lessons. The point of today's post isn't to pile on and throw another round into the echo-chamber of talking points you will hear again and again and again and again ... and again and again ... and again ... Of course I am aware of the importance of … [Read more...]

Eve Tushnet, “Gay and Celibate,” Featured in the New York Times

Photo Credit: Luke Sharrett/The New York Times

I still hold the perspective that we are headed, increasingly, into a post-gay reality.  A reality where gay vs. straight forced into the glbtqi? soup of labels fails to suffice as our (those who have or had same sex attractions) only context for a relational paradigm. Is Eve an example of that post-gay reality coming into being?  I don't believe I have ever met her and not sure she would agree with me since she does embrace a gay identity ... but her life doesn't really fit any of the conventional culture war stereotypes.  I find that intriguing. From the New York Times: WASHINGTON … [Read more...]

Disney Makes Right Decision Concerning “Ex-Gay” Policy

disney

Over the past year, PFOX worked within Disney circles to force a vote by shareholders to include "ex-gays" as a part of the Disney corporate non-discrimination policy.  Disney rejected the measure in terms that would make "landslide" seem a vast understatement (by 98%.) As stated before here and here, I don't think trying to adding another layer of identity politics to the culture war is a good idea. The language PFOX uses is confusing. It appears they are doing a "find and replace" word processing function on their organizational messaging.  They are copying gay activist talking … [Read more...]

The Hungry Beast Video on Gay/Post-gay Reality

Sennitt Family

First, here is the video. It's long (for an online video) but well done and interesting: My overall impression is that this is a very well produced video. Great camera shots, flow, narration and humanizing to all involved. The camera/editing didn't try to hide reality or characterize negatively. That said, Hadyn's testimony (the man on the post-gay journey) was interspersed in between the two gay men's testimonies (both named Anthony) at strategic points. This created an overall narrative which could leave an impression that if you don't reject a Christian post-gay approach in the … [Read more...]

Molotov Mitchell’s Videos Create Firestorm

Molotov

UPDATED with response from G-A-Y Blog at the end of the post. Molotov Mitchell is definitely making a name for himself. I met Molotov in DC in March of 2009.  He and his wife were hilarious and very personable.  I could relate to his zeal in talking about Christ but when it came to public policy ... not so much.  Granted we had some of the same ideas that certain things politically and culturally needed to be forthrightly addressed but his reasoning and approach seemed unnecessarily harsh.  I didn't say anything at the time because I just met the guy and I didn't want to jump right in … [Read more...]

Joy Behar’s Observation of Gay Male Fidelity and The Radical Redefinition of Marriage … by Heterosexuals

Joy Behar, God bless her (and I mean that) ... you never have to guess what she's thinking.  She recently made a statement on how she has heard that gay male couples do not hold to monogamous relationships like heterosexual couples. … [Read more...]

Disney Ordered to Include Ex-Gays in Shareholder Resolution

Disney

Sidenote: PFOX is no longer a part of the Exodus Member Ministry network.  The separation occurred last summer and was amicable. The PFOX Press Release (most of it) parsed with my comments: Disney Ordered to Include Ex-Gays in Shareholder Resolution BURBANK, Calif., Jan. 13 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) has directed the Walt Disney Company to accept a shareholder resolution requesting the inclusion of ex-gays in Disney's sexual orientation policies and corporate diversity programs. Disney had opposed the ex-gay resolution and asked the SEC for … [Read more...]

AIDS Organization “Muzzling” Christians – Why? What To Do?

One of my Facebook friends sent me this message: Hi, Randy. Last week I began orientation for (edited name of an organization out for confidentiality.) It is an interfaith organization that mininsters to people living with HIV/AIDS. I had continuing education this Monday through Wednesday. The training materials are awesome and the presenters of the different topics are committed to the cause. But volunteers are forbidden to share their faith or challenge their current behavior, which may be sinful and risky. They striclty forbid what they call proselytizing and will expell a volunteer … [Read more...]
