Alan-Chambers

This letter from Alan Chambers appears in both our offline and online newsletters.  To receive this letter along with the full newsletter online via email or offline through the postal service please sign up here. --- Today I was meditating on James 1.  The whole chapter is rich, but several verses leapt out at me, due to my recent attendance at the funerals of two of Exodus International's most valued women leaders.  James 1:2-4, 12: Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. … [Read more...]

Alan & Willa Medinger

Spouses dying within a few months of losing their spouse is more common than one would think. Sadly, but it is a bittersweet sadness, this has happened again. Willa Medinger passed away last week on September 16th. She had a couple of strokes and was not doing well. This after, her husband Alan Medinger passed away this past June. I only had a few interactions directly with Willa over the years but she was wonderful each time. What I love about her is that not only was she very kind to me when I did speak with her ... I would always hear amazing things about her from other friends who … [Read more...]

The Manhattan Declaration on Marriage

Manhattan Declaration

Last week 152 Orthodox, Catholic and Evangelical leaders issued the Manhattan Declaration that makes a commitment to speak to issues of Life, Marriage and Religious Liberty (link to file download at the end of the post.)  The authors did a very good job of explaining their positions and intentions within the manifesto. For the purposes of this post I am quoting the section on marriage. I am interested in your feedback.  That said, the bolded emphasis in parts of this quote are mine to highlight what stood out to me. Sidenote: As far as I know, Alan Chambers wasn't aware of the … [Read more...]

Homosexuality And Your Church – Thom Hunter for The BaptistMessenger.com

Excellent article: Homosexuality and Your Church by Thom Hunter What do the gay people in your church look like? Do you spot them by their flamboyant clothing, their mannerisms, their declarations? When a brother or sister in your church came to you to ask you for your help and support in their personal struggle against homosexuality, what did you do to walk with them? How did you respond the last time this happened to you? “Oh, we don’t have that problem in our church,” you say? If yours is a typical Southern Baptist church in Oklahoma, you do. If it is not a problem for … [Read more...]

What’s Good About Sex?

What's Good About Sex?

Excellent article over at the Focus website: ... Although there is plenty of bad in the contemporary sexual scene, it's clear that we're forgetting something. The only way to get something bad is to take something good and spoil it. Whenever you find a bad thing, look for a good thing somewhere in the ruins. The idea that sex is inherently bad doesn't come from the Bible. It comes from ancient gnosticism, which taught that the Creator wasn't God, but a lesser being who made a botch of things. Gnostics thought spirits good, bodies bad, and sex just a matter of bodies. But the Bible calls … [Read more...]
